The Sonny Rhodes Band
Blues guitarist, singer/writer Sonny Rhodes
is such a talented songwriter, so full of musical ideas, that he's
destined to inherit the acclaim that his influences such as Blues great
Albert Collins had enjoyed. The hardest
working Bluesman in America, he's a living legend from East Bay Oakland
to the Florida coast. On any given night in North America he's
seen wearin' the "peach" and heard burnin' up his lap
steel guitar with the Blues. His many recordings in Europe and the
United States, like new release Texas Fender Bender on Greater Planet records, back this up. Sonny Rhodes recorded his first record in 1961 under his real name, Clarence Edward Smith. Throughout
the last 37 years, Rhodes has recorded over two hundred songs. Though
Sonny refers to himself as the self-proclaimed "Disciple of the Blues"
he adds his life still has room for his God. in Blues
folklore, there's the cross roads, an infamous place where
Bluesmen in search of fame make deals with the Devil. In the
case of Sonny Rhodes, his deal was made in the cotton fields of Smithville Texas.

Pikes Peak Blues Community (PPBC) had the opportunity to meet Stacy Dyson last
summer where she presented a module for area teachers selected to
participate in Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration Summer
Workshops. We were so impressed by her warm, natural approach to
understanding meter and rhyme as it applies to the development of
lyrics, that we determined we had to engage her for the
2004 Lyric Writing Contest. She presented to five area high
schools: Manitou Springs High School, Doherty High School, Palmer High
School, Canon City High School and ??? The teachers who
taught the English Classes where Stacy presented were very
impressed.
Dianne
Moore, English III Honors teacher states, "Stacy's presentation was
fabulous! She did an outstanding job, I was enthralled, and she
got my students to write some really cool blues lyrics! Thank you
so much!"
Bob
Crowder, music teacher at Palmer High School provided the opportunity
for Stacy to present to Palmer students, along with Debie
Bennett, Creative Writing Class, of Manitou Springs High
School. Ms. Bennett enjoyed Stacy's presentation so
much that she also submitted lyrics for the sheer pleasure it provided
in word-crafting.
PPBC believes it
is essential to engage young people, to teach them about the roots
of popular music and to give them more tools for individual self
expression. Dyson encourages students to embrace their own
passion when writing their blues lyrics. The blues has given rise
to a voice that has carried many folks through times of uncertainty,
dilemma, suffering, disenfranchisement, lost love, and many
more life issues. Pikes Peak Blues Community exists
to enhance the vitality of blues and American roots music by supporting
live performance and education. Our Next Generation will help us achieve this mission.

How To Write A Blues Song
Early
blues lyrics focus on topics such as financial worries or social
injustices. W.C. Handy said, "The blues comes from nothingness,
from want, from desire."
Most
blues lyrics consist of stanzas containing three or four lines.
The first line sets up the problem. The second line restates or
embellishes on the problem, often using the same melody as the first
line. Lastly, the third and sometimes fourth line comment on the
problem, or offer a humorous of defiant take on it.
Here's an example of the blues format, sung from a kid's point of view:
Mom woke me up this mornin'
"It's time to go to school!"
Yeah, she woke me up this mornin'!
How could she be so cruel?
She says I'd better study.
Well, I'd rather take a snooze,
I've got the early-morning-still-asleep blues!
After you have an understanding of the "Blues" form, write your own blues song about something in your life.
